As part of the METHAREN project, we interviewed M. Eduard Alexandru Morosanu, leader of work package 5, and R&D project manager at Hysytech Srl.

Background

Q.: Could you share your professional journey up to the METHAREN project?

M. Eduard Alexandru Morosanu: I hold a degree in Chemical and Sustainable Processes Engineering from Politecnico di Torino and earned my PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2020, specialising in catalytic processes for CO₂ conversion into synthetic methane. At Hysytech, I lead research projects and manage the R&D team, contributing both scientifically and as a process engineer. Hysytech is an engineering company founded in 2003 specilised in the design, development and industrial implementation of new turn-key process technologies and equipment. I played there a key scientific role in multiple EU-funded projects, METHAREN being amongst them.

Role in the project

Q.: Could you share the main aims of the work you are leading in METHAREN?

M. Eduard Alexandru Morosanu: In METHAREN, I am leading the fifth work package (WP), i.e. WP5 – Integration and implementation in the demonstration site. This WP focuses on designing the integrated process, selecting, purchasing, and installing all the equipment needed for a complete biomethane production system. It will closely coordinate with other work packages (WP2, WP3, and WP4) to ensure everything fits together. The involved partners will also check, test, and verify each part of the system to make sure it is correctly installed, ready to operate, and fully functional at the ACEA demonstration site.

Progress and Challenges

Q.: What is the progress achieved so far for WP5?

M. Eduard Alexandru Morosanu:The overall system process engineering design is complete, and the main equipments have been purchased.

Q.: Have you encountered any challenges along the way?

M. Eduard Alexandru Morosanu: Coordinating many partners from different sectors (academia, research, and industry) was a challenge because they had different ways of working. At first, this caused some difficulties, but over time, everyone aligned and began collaborating effectively.

Next steps

Q.: What are the next activities planned for you and for Hysytech overall in METHAREN?

M. Eduard Alexandru Morosanu: The team is currently working on the detailed design, including 3D mechanical and electrical design, while also preparing the site for installation.
